Schalkwijk heat network

Share

The municipality of Haarlem has the ambition to be completely natural gas-free by 2040 and is currently working hard on a sustainable, green and clean city. One of the first major steps towards realising this sustainability ambition is the construction of a heat network in the Meerwijk district (part of the Schalkwijk district).

The role of Pryme

PrYme has been involved in the Warmtenet Schalkwijk project since December 2018, providing support services in the areas of visualisations, planning & risk management.

By means of visualisations PrYme clarified the dependencies of the subprojects. These subprojects include the realisation of sustainable heat sources (geothermal, aquathermal & residual heat data center), the construction of the necessary infrastructure between the sources and the district and the distribution network in the district itself. Additionally, an organisation needs to take on the role of heat supplier; and homes and other buildings need to be prepared for joining the heat network.

Planning-driven

The objective of the municipality of Haarlem to be free of natural gas by 2040 is ambitious, but necessary to achieve the climate objective as included in the Climate Agreement. Because the construction of the heat network is a major investment, the heat network will initially be realised in Meerwijk, one of the four districts of the Schalkwijk district.

Meerwijk will then be connected to the heat network in phases; first large buildings and complexes will be connected (such as housing corporation flats, schools, care centers and offices). Subsequently, individuals will also be able to connect to the heat network.

In order to minimise inconvenience in Meerwijk, the heat network will be constructed simultaneously with the Integral Renewal of Public Space project (IVORIM). This means that the streets in the district only need to be broken up once. However, this requires careful coordination between the two projects; an aspect that makes planning for this project even more challenging.

Joint risk management

Engaged

In the meantime, we continue our search for the optimal working method. Through a flexible attitude and great involvement with the project team, we are working in close cooperation with the team members towards a sustainable, green and clean Haarlem.
